Information for Young Comedians, Parents and Guardians
Grassroots Comedy is committed to supporting the next generation of comedians in Western Australia.
We recognise that many comedians discover stand-up comedy at a young age and are looking for opportunities to gain experience in front of live audiences. To ensure a safe, supportive and enjoyable environment, Grassroots Comedy has established guidelines for performers under the age of 18.
If you are a young comedian interested in performing, or a parent looking for information about youth stand-up comedy opportunities in Perth, this page outlines everything you need to know.
Performing Under 18
Grassroots Comedy welcomes applications from performers under the age of 18.
While comedy venues are often located within licensed premises, young performers may be eligible to participate provided they comply with the requirements outlined below.
All participation is assessed on a case-by-case basis and may be subject to venue, safety and operational considerations.
Approved Venues
Grassroots Comedy welcomes applications from performers under the age of 18.
At present, performers under the age of 18 may only perform at selected Grassroots Comedy venues.
Current approved venues include:
-
Leederville Comedy Club
-
Bassendean Hotel
-
Guildford Hotel
These venues have been selected because they provide a suitable environment for young performers and their families.
Performers under the age of 18 are not permitted to perform at Grassroots Comedy events held in Northbridge.
Venue eligibility may change over time.
Parent and Guardian Requirements
All performers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or responsible adult.
The accompanying adult must:
-
Arrive with the performer and remain onsite for the duration of the visit.
-
Be contactable at all times.
-
Supervise the performer before and after their set.
-
Be responsible for transport arrangements.
Grassroots Comedy reserves the right to refuse participation where adequate supervision is not available.
Minor Performer Agreement
All performers under the age of 18 are required to complete a Minor Performer Agreement before participating in any Grassroots Comedy event.
The agreement helps ensure that performer information, emergency contacts and permissions remain current.
The agreement must be renewed annually.

Material Requirements
Grassroots Comedy encourages creativity, originality and self-expression.
For performers under the age of 16, material may be reviewed prior to performance to ensure it is appropriate for both the performer and the venue environment.
This process is designed to provide guidance and support rather than restrict creativity.
The objective is to ensure that young performers are given the best opportunity to succeed while maintaining the standards and reputation of the Grassroots Comedy community.
Photography, Filming and Social Media
Grassroots Comedy does not publish promotional photographs, videos, social media posts, reels, performer spotlights or other marketing material featuring performers under the age of 18.
This policy helps protect the privacy of young performers and allows them to participate without creating an unwanted public or online profile.
Safety and Wellbeing
The safety and wellbeing of performers, audience members, volunteers and venue staff is a priority.
Grassroots Comedy reserves the right to refuse, postpone or discontinue a performance where there are concerns relating to safety, behaviour, venue requirements or compliance with this policy.
Any decisions made under this policy will be guided by the best interests of the performer, audience and broader comedy community.
